[TAMADOT, MOROCCO] — The drive from Marrakesh is only a little more than an hour, but you feel like you are a thousand miles away. As you climb the High Atlas mountains, suddenly a lush green valley opens up before you, with the palisade of the snow-capped High Atlas and Mount Toubkal (the highest mountain in Morocco) staring right at you. On the edge of a cliff clings Kasbah Tamadot, it’s ramparts framing the mountains further down the valley. The first thing that hits you, besides the glamor and the overlapping wildflower scents that is Morocco, is the pool. Perfectly situated along the cliff side, with perfectly positioned cypress trees picket-fenced in a row. A cooling mint tea — the standard Berber greeting almost everywhere in Morocco — is poured for you as you check in on the veranda. A curious peacock nervously gets closer and closer to greet you, nudging almost to your knees. The sun is high, the pool blue, the shade and tea refreshing. And that’s how your experience starts at Tamadot. Marrakesh seems a world away.
Continuing on my quest and hobby of finding the world’s best hotels, I chose this one. My dream place that I’ve always had on my wish list — Kasbah Tamadot.
Originally owned by Richard Branson as a private residence, now part of the Virgin Limited Edition hotel group, this would be my base for the next couple of days of trekking. A veddy, veddy nice base.
Like everything in Morocco, it is perfect beyond your wildest dreams. The main buildings, the out-buildings, the pool, the grounds, the service and the extremely fun and friendly service — they seem to dig working there as much as everyone being there.
After a couple of days in Marrakesh, you should head up into the Atlas Mountains to really do a deep-dive into Morocco’s Berber culture and absolute beauty. You can sit. Eat. Hike or trek from village to village, in some of the most stunning geography there is. All made better by the outstanding Moroccan hospitality and over the top luxury of Kasbah Tamadot.
